MALAYSIA’S INTERVENTION AT THE WORKING DINNER FOR ASEAN FOREIGN MINISTERS AHEAD OF THE 35TH ASEAN SUMMIT AND RELATED SUMMITS IN BANGKOK, THAILAND, 1ST NOVEMBER 2019

At the Working Dinner for ASEAN Foreign Ministers, Foreign Minister Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah touched on the Rohingya crisis in his intervention, expressed Malaysia’s support for the proposal by ASEAN Secretary General, H.E. Lim Jock Hoi to establish a full-time, dedicated team tasked to implement holistic and sustainable works of the repatriation process which is voluntary, safe and dignified. The full-time group should enlist volunteers from civil society organisations (CSOs) working on the process.

In this regard, ASEAN should facilitate a process of meaningful dialogue between Myanmar and Rohingya refugees in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh in order to build a foundation of trust needed for the facilitation of voluntary repatriation.
